Report

The stage was set for a massive game.. with Quake Wars around the corner, many speculated this would be Australian Wolf:ET's last big hurrah.

The map choices were Radar for MO, Goldrush for VS and Ice as the tiebreaker if needed..

Coming out of the season Minor Premiers, MO had the choice of which map to play first..

The game started out on Radar with MO on attack. Adversus came out hard not giving an inch, holding MO for the fulltime of 12 minutes. On attack, they won the round in 5:04..

Attacking again, MO were able to dig in a little deeper, holding VS out for 10:38. VS responded by holding out MO for that time.. taking Radar 2-0 in a very convincing fashion.

Before Radar was over, spec mm2 was filled with shoutcasters questions about whether or not a team had won a final after losing their own map.. they had, and it was Adversus in Season 7. Things werent looking too crash hot in anyones book.

It was over to Goldrush, Adversus' map of choice for this and last seasons grand finals. At this point, many expected the match to be a writeoff.

MO came out of the gates setting 8:12, and despite a massive roll by VS on attack, VS were held out.. seing MO take the first round. It was around here that Aus ET were treated to what, as a player back from Season 1, I can only call the "history of Goldrush Defense."

MO's Bank Defense (circa 2004) had held out Adversus, and it was going to again.. VS were full held for 15 minutes. MO only had to set a time to take the match to the tiebreaker, and it was looking like a sure bet.

VS had other ideas.

In what can only be described as "almost everything you can do defensively on goldrush" - VS dug their heels in, holding MO out in return.

The momentum was shifting in this dirty tug of war, and Adversus were holding the lions share of the rope. MO attacked, and were held out for 14:51, with VS pulling off many amazing returns along the way. In response, they came back with 6:39. The score was 1-1-1.. (deja vu anyone?)

VS were keen to ride their momentum, and they did. They came out in dominating fashion, setting 6:52.

As an oldschool player myself, its around here where you can begin to feel bricks on your shoulders while your jockeying your keyboard and mouse. The pressure was easily on us, having to beat the 2nd fastest time of the night against an Adversus that had just found their feet on their home map.

The call was made, "we just have to make no mistakes. lets ready up." - and we did.

I havent re-watched this round, so I cant say if / how many mistakes were made, but what did happen, was a standard hold on tank by Adversus, a Tank Barrier build and a Truck Barrier build. Somewhere during that, MO rolled in, and rolled out, beating what seemed like an impossible time considering the way the game had gone, in 6:11.

If we'd been in Waynes World, someone would have said "Game On!"

(As an aside, if you watch one match on goldrush this year, make it this one. Crazy, unorthodox play, and more amazing clutches than you can poke a stick at.)

The game was going to a tiebreaker.. both teams having won their rivals map. Ice was the GameOp choice, and after a short breather and the requisite "ice ice baby" jokes, we readied up.

VS rolled in on attack grabbing the flag off of their first push. They werent able to ride the momentum however, and were only able to touch the documents once or twice in the 15 minutes that they were held. MO came back with a time of 4:22 in response.

Coming out hard again, MO set 5:27. Game on the line, the guys had found their feet and were focused on taking it out.

VS attacked hard and despite some great changeup plays and gambits to get the docs, they were unsuccessful. MO held out VS for the time, taking the match 2-1, seeing them become GameArena Enemy Territory Season 9 Champions!
